Tips for Taking Better Photos of Your Kids – Framing Your Subject

05.07.2019 · In: Photography Tips + Tricks

Hey mama! Have you heard of the photography technique called “framing” before? It is just how it sounds—using elements in your photo to create a “frame” around your subject. Framing is such a fun and easy way to add interest to the photography of your kiddos. Frames also draw the viewer’s eye to the subject of your photo, which is exactly what we want!

Frames are EVERYWHERE…I promise, once you start seeing them, you may not be able to stop! In nature, look for trees, foliage, and pathways. Man-made elements such as fences and barns work great too!

Architectural elements like doorways, windows and archways are perfect frames. But try thinking outside the box—I love using curtains when we are inside (bonus = being near a window gives you great natural light). Play with shadows too!

Shooting through an object, like my daughter’s princess castle (below), or into a room (above) adds interest to the story you are telling with your photo.

The sky and your imagination is the limit when it comes to frames! I would love to see what ideas you come up with for frames. Use #MyStoryInPhotos on Instagram to show me!
